Book Review - Cross My Heart by Roxy Sloane

Cross My Heart by Roxy Sloane

I am feeling extra accomplished after finishing this book. Cross My Heart was my hundredth read of the year, which means that I officially doubled my reading goal for the year. Now I haven't posted 100 reviews this year because I'm a little behind, but by the end of January, I will be finished posting all the books I've read in 2023.

That aside, I should get into the description of the book now. Tessa is a grad student in England studying abroad on a fellowship at one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions in Oxford. But Tessa has ulterior motives for being there. Her sister, Wren, used to study at Oxford until she showed up back in the States, a complete shell of her former self. Oxford led to Wren's tragic death, and Tessa is going to figure out what happened to her sister. Anthony St. Clair is a professor at the college who takes an interest in Tessa and through him, she's exposed to the world of the elite and privileged.

I loved Tessa's dedication to solving the mystery behind her sister's death. I did feel as though she allowed herself to be distracted a little by Saint (the professor) but she ultimately remained steadfast in her search for the truth. My only true complaint about her is that she was a shitty friend, specifically to her roommate Jia and their friend Kris. For example, Tessa agreed to go to Kris' comedy show then forgot about it since she spent time with Saint. This ultimately leads to a falling out between the friend group, but I hope we'll see more of them in the following books. Now let's talk about Anthony St. Clair, or Saint. Before Tessa, he has this reputation for being a playboy Casanova. But after meeting Tessa, he starts seriously thinking about being in a real relationship for the first time. It's really endearing. My complaint about Saint, however, was that his attraction to Tessa was too immediate. It went from 0-100 way too quickly and felt a little unnatural. My few complaints aside though, I thought the characters in this book were pretty well written, as was the plot.

I really enjoyed reading this book because the plot kept me intrigued. In my opinion, not too much happened storywise. A lot of this book was basically just smut and descriptions of Tessa and Saint's attraction. However, I thought that the slower pace of this book suited the overall story well. It offered some very good dark academia and mysterious vibes too.

I am absolutely going to be reading the next book in the series because that cliffhanger was brutal. I need to know what happens next.
