Book Review - Skin of a Sinner by Avina St. Graves

Skin of a Sinner by Avina St. Graves

I found this book through Facebook in a Kindle group on a post where someone was looking for recommendations on books similar to Haunting Adeline. If you don't already know, Haunting Adeline is a very dark romance with a very questionable male main character. There's no morally gray going on, the male main character is a walking red flag. That being said, I loved it. That probably means I should be in therapy, but still, it was really good. Anyway, Skin of a Sinner was compared to Haunting Adeline, so I read it. But honestly, I thought that Skin of a Sinner was even darker.

Isabella is a girl who's had a rough upbringing. She's gone through several foster homes and gets bullied at school. But one day when she's six years old she meets Roman, a boy who's eight years old, who also has had a rough life. They become best friends and life is great. But on Isabella's seventeenth birthday, Roman disappears and Bella's life is turned upside down as the person she's always relied on is no longer in her life. She has a difficult two years, but eventually learns how to be independent. That is, until one day, she wakes up to her foster family being killed by no other than Roman himself.

Ignoring the fact that he's a murderous psychopath, Roman was my favorite character in this book. He is so fiercely loyal and protective over Bella, and it's kind of sweet in a psychotic way. He had been her protector through childhood and continues throughout everything they go through after he comes back into Bella's life. The only thing I thought was strange was that Roman was sort of a genius but he kept putting Bella into dangerous situations by accident. I just thought that was a strange character flaw. Bella was an interesting character, but I didn't really like her to be honest. She continually blamed Roman for things that were out of his control. It was just so silly.

The plot of this book was pretty good. It was written in a dual POV (Bella and Roman) and started with their childhoods and how they met and then moved on to current time. They basically end up on the run together and their journey is an adventure. It wasn't the most exciting, action-filled story, but it kept me entertained until the end.

Overall, a good, very dark romance read if that's what you're into.
