Book Review - Of Mischief & Mages by L.J. Andrews

Of Mischief & Mages by L.J. Andrews

As I started reading this book, I was wondering why I was recognizing the writing style so much and then I realized that Of Mischief & Mages is written by the same author as a series I started to read previously, the Broken Kingdoms series. I enjoyed starting that series but just never finished for some reason. I really enjoyed reading Of Mischief & Mages too. I think it's my first mage fantasy too.

Of Mischief and Mages follows Adira. Adira was orphaned when she was younger and is now doing whatever she can to get by in life. One day on the job her boss sends her to a casino in Las Vegas, but things go wrong and she's suddenly thrust into a strange world of Mages, Magiaria. While in this world, she gets robbed by a group of thieves but something about their leader, Kage, intrigues her. While wandering around Magiaria, royal guards recognize her as a famous powerful blood mage known as The Curse Breaker. Adira is invited to dinner with the Prince and while they're eating, the Prince's brother, Kage, comes in and they recognize each other because he is the leader of the thieves who robbed her. As Adira spends more time in Magiaria, she and Kage are constantly drawn together, and as time progresses they realize that their pasts are intertwined as they work together to rid Magiaria of a horrible curse.

I really loved the characters in this book. Adira was an admirable and likable female main character. And Kage is the epitome of a morally gray male main character. I thought their relationship was so interesting. I don't want to spoil anything, but things between them are so much more complicated than they initially think. Honestly though, the supporting characters were the star of the show for me. Gwyn and Cyland were such fun side characters. I would love to read a book about either of them because they were each so unique.

I loved the story of this book. It starts off with modern day technologies and stuff like that, but when Adira ends up in Magiaria it's like being in the medieval times again with more rudimentary technologies. I have always enjoyed this type of story that almost switches between time periods as they move through different worlds. The story basically follows Adira as she tries to unlock secrets of her past to help break the curse on Magiaria. It was really interesting and I was entertained the whole time.

Overall, a fun mage romance with some spice.
