Book Review - Frost by C.N. Crawford

Frost by C.N. Crawford

I was not expecting to like this book as much as I did. Although the plot is pretty predictable, the whole story was really interesting. This book is basically a crossover between The Bachelor and a fae romance novel. I liked that this took place in the current time because a lot of the books I've been reading take place in some medieval-ish settings. So this book was a refreshing read right off the bat.

This story is about Ava, who finds her boyfriend in bed with another girl on her birthday. She decides to go to the bar and get wasted, but while she's there she finds out that the Seelie King Torin is hosting a competition to be his wife and hold the title of Seelie Queen, and 100 common faes (like Ava) will be chosen to compete. And it just so happens that King Torin is visiting the bar the same night, which results in Ava drunkenly ranting and insulting him. However, Torin eventually offers her 50 million to enter the competition and win, because he needs to find a wife who he could never love (ouch, am I right?). But Ava agrees. Ava ends up willing the competition, but a shocking plot twist at the end makes it so that she could never actually be the Seelie Queen.

The relationship between Torin and Ava was top-tier and the relationship didn't feel forced at all. Their relationship grew as Torin attempts to train Ava and prepare her for each challenge of the competition to be Queen. I really liked the secondary characters as well like Shalini and Aeron. The only complaint I have is that there was a lot of insulting talk about "common fae" and how they're inferior, but it was never really addressed or resolved at all. I'm hoping that the second book, Ambrosia, will offer some clarification on why so many of the characters in this book spoke like that.

I cannot wait to read Ambrosia and will be starting it up as soon as possible!
