Book Review - Pestilence by Laura Thalassa

Pestilence by Laura Thalassa

I'd just like to start off this review by saying that this is an incredibly unique book. I have yet to come across a book like this in my time reading. Essentially it's a story about how four horsemen (Pestilence, War, Famine, and Death) were sent to the earth and caused an apocalypse. One day they suddenly disappeared, but left humans to fend for themselves in an apocalyptic world. But things change once again when Pestilence makes a return with a mission to wipe out humanity. Sara Burns, a 21-year-old firefighter, was left behind by her friends to kill Pestilence. However, she fails and pisses off Pestilence causing him to take her as a prisoner.

Although I did enjoy reading this book, this is where it gets weird for me. I can't decide if Sara is bordering on a Stockholm Syndrome-like relationship with Pestilence or if it's just full-blown Stockholm Syndrome. He treated her terribly, by tying her to his horse and making her run behind it, forcing her to watch innocent people and children die of the plague he brought, and many other things, yet his few tender moments, like when he treats her wounds that he's created, somehow cause her to fall for him.

Their weird relationship aside, I think that the overall idea, that Sara helps show Pestilence that humanity is worth saving, redeems this book. I'm not sure if I'll be reading the sequels (about the other 3 horsemen) going forward, but this book was entertaining enough.
