Book Review - A Touch of Darkness by Scarlett St. Clair

A Touch of Darkness by Scarlett St. Clair

It had been a while since I'd read any books that are retelling Greek mythology, and this one did not disappoint. A Touch of Darkness is a retelling of the story of Persephone and Hades. But it's an urban fantasy that takes place in the modern day, which makes it a little more interesting than I would've expected.

Persephone, daughter of Demeter, has constantly been warned by her mother against getting involved with Hades. This doesn't prevent this from happening when Persephone and her friend Lexa go to a nightclub, owned by Hades, to party. Somewhere along the day, Persephone accidentally enters into a contract with Hades in which she either has to create life in the Underworld (mind you, Persephone thinks she has no magic of her own) or stay in the Underworld forever.

Over the course of her time trying to fulfill her contract, Persephone and Hades grow closer together. What we find out is that Demeter has been trying to keep Persephone from Hades because there is a prophecy that Persephone will become the queen of the Underworld. Because Hades helped Persephone unlock her magic, she was able to fight back against her mother and chose to be with Hades as his queen.

Overall a quick, not too special, but enjoyable read. I will definitely be reading the sequels eventually.
