Series Review - Frost and Nectar Series by C.N. Crawford
Frost and Nectar Series by C.N. Crawford
This series was my introduction to C.N. Crawford and I will definitely be reading more of her work in the future. She has a great way of telling stories and painting images of the fantasy world. Although I'm still fairly new to the whole fae romance genre, I didn't feel lost in this story like I've felt with other books and series in the past.
This series explains the love story between Ava and Torin. Ava is a young woman who found her boyfriend, on her birthday, in bed with another woman and has sworn off all men. She is also a fae who was adopted by a human when the Seelies abandoned and exiled her as a child. Torin is the Seelie King, cursed to freeze any woman he loves, who has sworn off love. When the time comes for Torin to find a queen, there is a bachelor meets hunger games type of competition to find out who is worthy of holding the title of Seelie Queen. After an unfortunate meeting between Ava and Torin in which Ava publicly insulted Torin in a drunken rant, he decided that she'd be a perfect queen for him because he could never love her. Ava ends up winning the deadly competition for the crown but after Torin almost freezes her accidentally she panics and begs for home and a portal opens up. Going through this portal, she found herself in the realm of the Unseelie, and suddenly she had sprouted horns.
In the second book of the series, we find out that Torin followed Ava through the portal and the pair gets captured by Queen Mab (the queen of the Unseelie). They are tortured and during this time make several attempts to escape but are recaptured. Finally, Queen Mab tells them that they are to fight each other for their freedom, but only one of them can walk away with their lives. Torin allows Ava to stab him (or rather forces her to stab him) but Ava then taps into her hidden magic and attempts to attack the queen which gets her recaptured again. During her recapture, she finally unlocks the full potential of her magic and finds Torin who's very much alive but they part ways because he's cursed to freeze any woman he'll love. So she goes back to the human realm, and he goes back to his court. However, he's not welcomed back because during his time away people have turned on him, believing that he's a traitor. Ava ends up coming back to the Seelie kingdom and helping Torin restore balance and take back the throne.
The story of this series was really unique but I almost wish it were a trilogy and not a duology. Ambrosia felt really rushed at the end, and I feel like there were so many missed opportunities to offer more insight. Despite this, I really enjoyed reading this series and thought it was a great urban fantasy romance series. The plot and story were really good, and the characters were really likable and well-written for the most part.
4/5 for the series as a whole.
