Book Review - Bridgerton: The Duke and I by Julia Quinn

Bridgerton: The Duke and I by Julia Quinn

I have watched Bridgerton on Netflix so I was already familiar with the story before I read this book. With that said, I was pretty disappointed while reading this. Usually, you want a book to show you the plot and not tell you the plot, but I felt as though everything was being told and not shown. It may be the style in which this book is written. Or maybe I just don't like reading stories told in the third person.

The only characters I really liked in this book are Daphne's brothers, Anthony, Collin, and Benedict. It was clear how much they cared about their sister and her happiness. But other than that, I found it really difficult to like Daphne or Simon. Which is really disappointing considering that the whole story is about them. Daphne is unlikable and basically forces Simon to marry her even though she knows he never wants to marry or have children. Then when they're married she's upset that he doesn't want to have children, so she takes things into her own hands and seduces him to try and impregnate herself. Simon is slightly more likable than Daphne, it helps that we feel bad for him after his daddy issues, but he goes back and forth on his beliefs so many times in this book that he seems ingenuine.

I was really hoping that I'd like these books because I love the show so much, but they just let me down. I'm not sure I'll be reading further on in the series.
