Book Review - A Court So Dark by Ingrid Seymour
A Court So Dark by Ingrid Seymour
This is the third and final installment of the Healer of Kingdoms series by Ingrid Seymour. I was anticipating its release since I read the first two books around March. The first two books I thought were pretty good and kept me interested in reading on, but for some reason this last book just didn't capture my attention in the way I expected it to. I read it about 70% of the way through then stopped to read a few other books before starting it up again. It's not that it was bad or worse than any of the other books in the series, I just couldn't get into it.
After forcing myself to read it, I was happy that I did but it just didn't hit the same as the other books did. It might've been the wait between this book and the last that caused me to feel detached from the characters but I just couldn't force myself to care about anything that was happening. With that being said, however, I thought that there were some interesting plot points. Even though I was skimming through the last 40% or so, I found a HUGE typo in this book. At one point Kalyll is admiring himself and Dani says, “conceded much?” although really it should say, “conceited much?”
One thing I started to dislike is the double persona thing going on with Kalyll/Wolfe. They both treat Dani differently. Kalyll is a kind gentleman while Wolfe is aggressive but protective. I just don't see how Dani could love both of them the same way. Also, Dani is kind of annoying me at this point. She just can't seem to listen to anyone and keeps insisting on being in on the action 100% of the time. And the whole “Dark Dani” thing just got so old so quickly. It’s like she created another dark persona of herself so that she could justify being with both Kalyll and Wolfe. As if the Dark Dani was a match for Wolfe just as regular Dani was a match for Kalyll.
Despite everything I thought this was a sweet book that had a nice ending even if it did feel a bit rushed. I still love the relationship/friendship between all the friends (Kryn, Silver, Cylea, Jeondar, Arabis, Kalyll, and Dani). The way they work together for each other is really sweet and admirable.
