Book Review - Helfyre by Mariel Pomeroy

Helfyre by Mariel Pomeroy

I believe that I found this book through bookstagram or TikTok, but I can't exactly remember. Regardless though, this book did not live up to my expectations, unfortunately. When I first read the description of this book I was intrigued because it described the book as a "dark romance high fantasy" but it fell short on both aspects.

Aheia is on the run from an abusive father in Keloseros, however, it leads her right into the realm of Aljira, infamous for darkness and danger. In Aljira, Aheia comes face to face with Arioch, the leader of the Nephilim. Aheia is forced into making a deal that guarantees her safety in exchange for her soul. However, now that Aheia's soul is the property of Arioch, they find themselves drawn to each other.

I will say that the concept of this book is so interesting and there is so much potential for a great story. It just wasn't executed in the best way. The relationship between Arioch and Aheia was just too strange and forced. It wasn't even that they were drawn to each other, it was just immediate lust out of nowhere. I can appreciate an author who writes heavy descriptions, but in this case, it was just too much. There were way too many phrases and names to remember that it was so hard to remember who everyone was and what was going on. I would agree with other complaints that the writing is detailed to the point of distraction. I only really started enjoying the story when I just accepted the fact that I was always going to be slightly confused. Overall, I did still enjoy reading this book.

I expected so much from this book going into it that I may try to read it again in the future with lowered expectations to give it another chance.
