Book Review - Break My Rules by Roxy Sloane
Break My Rules by Roxy Sloane
Break My Rules is the second book in The Oxford Legacy series and my first read of 2024. I mostly enjoyed the first book in the series, Cross My Heart, specifically for the vibes. And I did, for the most part, enjoy Break My Rules for the same reasons.
This book continues right where the first left off, with Tessa discovering that Saint has the same tattoo that her sister Wren's abuser had. After this revelation, she plays it cool and ditches the party they were at. She ultimately confronts Saint and he assures her that it wasn't him and tells her that he's not the only one with the tattoo. His close friends Hugh and Max also have them. So they work together to try and sus out which one of his friends isn't who they appear to be.
So I maintain all my complaints about the characters I mentioned in my review of Cross My Heart. But I have a few more to add now too. Tessa is still a shitty friend. She basically cold-shoulders her friends for Saint and then acts like they're in the wrong for treating her poorly afterward. Also, I feel as though Tessa was completely unhinged in this book, like what happened with Max for example. And Saint just completely went along with it and made excuses for her actions. I don't know, I feel as though a guy like Saint, accomplished and smart, would have a better sense than to just go along with her crazy whims. But that might just be me.
Once again, I feel as though the actual plot of the book was overshadowed by the spice and smut. Someone in a review said that it was a 3-star plot with 5-star spice, and I would have to agree. Like every other chapter, there's a several-page-long sex scene, which I don't necessarily mind, but it got boring with every scene being the exact same.
Honestly though, despite how crazy this book got, I'm interested in seeing how the series is going to end, so I am going to be reading the final book in the trilogy.
